400 attend Center’s Cook-Off, with more than $41,000 given

Over the past 3 years, nearly 1100 people have gathered to enjoy a battle for their sophisticated tastes when 4 local teams prepared their signature dishes and competed for audience votes.  The Center’s Cook-Off has turned out to be one of Whitley County’s most unique, tasteful and enjoyable sociable events.

On April 15th, 2010, The Center for Whitley County Youth held its 3rd Annual Benefit Cook-Off where 2 returning teams and 2 new teams prepared their best 3-course meals to win attendees’ votes for the prestigious “Best Overall Meal” Award, as well as the “Best Dish” and “Most Creative Meal” Awards.  This year’s cooking Teams were led by community all-stars: Teacher Shanna Fleetwood (Team Churubusco High School), Senator Gary Dillon (Team Doc Dillon), John Meister (Team Parkview Hospital), and Principal Gregg Goewert (Team Columbia City High School).  Team Churubusco High School won the “Best Dish” award, while Team Dillon took home the “Most Creative” and “Best Overall Meal” Awards.

Outstanding Volunteer Awards were also given to volunteers who went above and beyond this past year.  Recipients included: Tony and Jessica Kaiser, Amber Richardson, and student volunteer, Todd Morphew.

This year’s Cook-Off  was at 6:30pm and held at the First Church of God Banquet Hall, 1200 Depoy Dr., in Columbia City.  Nearly 400 people came out to sample the delicious food and to hear more about The Center’s mission and the impact they have had as they celebrate their 5 year anniversary.  The community once again came through as nearly $41,000 from gifts, pledges, and matching gifts was raised (gifts still coming in) to help fund The Center as it continues its mission to promote youth development in Whitley County.  100% of the event’s giving goes to support The Center’s youth programming because the Cook-Off expenses are underwritten by some generous sponsors, including: More Farm Store, Redwood IT, STAR Financial Bank, Whitley County Community Foundation, Orizon Real Estate, Gotcha Covered, White’s Flooring, Wigent Excavating, J&J Insurance, The Post & Mail, Valero Convenience Store, Schrader Real Estate, and Star Insurance.  The staff and board of The Center also want to say thanks to the community for all their support not just during this year’s event, but over the past 5 years as well.  It’s only through the incredible support from the community that The Center has been able to reach this 5 year milestone.
